OUT OF SEASON

The russet vestments of the leaves
Bless all within this autumn scene
The sea front sullen, out of season
Silent and solemn, the year now spent
Where summer decked out once these dreams
Stacked row on row on promenades
The spectral shades of adolescence
Swiftly board the carousel
Now covered, rusting, long since silenced
The shades of sad nags bear the weight
Of summer's annual obsolescence

The seafront harbours secret wishes
Once couples kissed and sealed their fate
And post-conjoined, then joined their hands
To pray their precious moment lasts
Beyond the shoreline, beyond the skyline
Beyond a daytime's quest for fun
But hours merely move more slowly
The final sentence once begun
A stay of execution only
As nothing lasts nor can outrun
Our transit round indifferent sun

IF AGONY AUNTS WERE POETS

Dear...

"Never date a self-centred man
There'd three in the relationship before it began
Buy him a mirror so he can preen himself all day
Wish them a fond farewell then send both on their way"

"Don't cry over a selfish guy,
He wants his fingers in every pie
Including yours and your best friend's
Tell him that this is where his dining ends..."

"Never date an ugly man
Unless he drives a big white van
They have their uses every day
The vans I mean, obviously..."

"Never date a cultured man
He'll be highly strung and not a fan
Of Corrie, EastEnders or Emmy Farm
Within a week you'll do him harm"

"Never date a clumsy chap
Unless of course you're called MissHap
MissHandle, MissPlace or MissLed
I dread to think what he'd be like in bed"

"Never go out with an intense fella
Profundity has its charms but it's not a great seller
You'll never feel comfortable and never socialise
As long as he's watching you with his madly staring eyes"

"Please try to resist an angry man
Who rants at you like a rabid black and tan
Such sway and charm you must resist
Firmly tell him he must leave and,
Sweetly state he won't be missed"

"Steer away from any man
Who gets his tan from a can
Unless that can is really Cannes
Aboard his giant catamaran"

"Never under any circumstances, consider a  man
Who thinks haute cuisine is an egg and spinach flan
You'll do him a favour and time you'll save
By ditching him and his microwave"

"Don't entertain a travelling man
He'll talk all day about Japan
Iran, Hindustan or Yucatan
Indeed, any place that can rhyme with 'an'
His favourite place is naturally the Isle of Man..."

"And never, ever, entertain a poet!
They write silly rhymes don't you know it?"

A GOTHIC OBSESSION

A GOTHIC OBSESSION

When I was yours and you were mine,
The places we'd visit I turned into shrines, so
When it was over, the pilgrim in me,
So melancholy, would furrow the pavements in
Sweet adoration, frustration, my
Footsteps, in circles I travelled,
My mind without guidance on losing its star.

I drifted the streets, the cafés, retreats, the bars and
The benches, the forsaken places, and grieve at the
Graveside, you'd never give me.
For I was your spectre, your ghoul, life's spectator,
I was your shadow that you left behind.

A shade in the sunlight, a light lit at midnight,
Of pacing the house, asking why this should be,
(Oh derelict house haunted solely by me!),
Blind to all beauty, deaf to the birdsong, numb
To all feelings except self-pity.
For I was your footprint, the trace of your outline,
A guest of the twilight, living dead time.

The garden at midnight, the fluttering
Moonlight, wisteria climbing the ancient
High walls, oh heady sweet incense,
Evoking, invoking, the warmth of
Your presence, so soft the footfall,
Down paths veined in silver,
To where I would meet her,
The vines ever round us,
The silence surrounds us,
A twisting and twining, a threading, enshrining,
Forever defining, when I was once we.

The woodbine’s decaying, oh cloying sweet perfume!
The honeycomb weeps for to sleep for to sleep,
This constant sad yearning, to stop the wheel turning,
Staying our parting although you are gone,
Staying our parting although you are gone.

These punishing thoughts are the sweetest of pleasures,
The torturing treasures that bind you to me,
To eke out existence, the years in the distance,
Beckon so barren and grey as the sea,
My constant persistence, your promise; subsistence that feeds
My resistance to letting you go.
In circles thoughts travel, then logic unravels
Delaying the season for letting you go.
Delaying the season for letting you go.

Please free me, please free me, please never to see me,
But freedom would pain me, re-chain me, heartbreak me,
Freedom would slave me I need to be
Yours.

Stop the leaves from their turning to russet red yearning,
Burning all hope, that one day we’ll be one.
Slow the beat, slow the beat, stay the beat of the drum
From this presage of prison and the scaffold to come.
Dam these lines ever flowing,
Your presence from towing
Ever my heart, my heart, behind yours
Stop the sunset from sliding from off the horizon,
Stay the warmth of your presence,
Distill me your essence,
Until I am ready,
Store the stars and the seasons
Until I see reasons,
Until there are reasons,
For letting you go,
Hang the moon and the heavens,
Burst the clouds, burn the oceans,
Stem  the tides from their shores,
Mute every bird-song then,
Right all the world’s wrongs,
Until you achieve these,
I will stay yours

Make me your altar,
Your Bible, your psalter,
Read me for leisure, instruction or pleasure,
Hold me close and read in to me, every day,
Make me your precedent,
Your last will and testament,
Your pillow, your headstone,
Your reliquary!

We Come In Peace

WE COME IN PEACE

Tearing you to pieces

Dividing you in pieces

Bringing aid piecemeal

Piece time workers

Assemble weapons piece by piece

Pierce holes in steel

Drive rivet, twist ratchet, choose

Your customised techno-hatchet,

To tear those over seas to pieces

Drop bombs to bring you peace

We bring you peace with guns and tanks

The ultimate billion dollar peacemaker

Heart-breaker

Dividing your country piece by piece

Deal breaking with criminal types

Armour piercing ammunition

It's enough to break your hearts

Leave grieving families picking up the pieces

Of their lives

Of their children

Of husbands and wives

Like bloody jigsaw pieces

They cannot reassemble

From the comfort of a bunker

Three thousand miles away

It's all a piece of cake

Every dog of war has his day

Let's whore that minutes silence

While we war an end to violence

And all peace upon your graves

Blood and Flowers

Blood and flowers
Are all that I could offer you
Blood and flowers
Strewn upon your wedding hearse
Stuck here together
Since love departed
Stuck here forever
In sickness, death and something worse

Blood and flowers
Not for the feigning hearted
Blood and flowers
Did we realise what we had started?
Stuck here together
Since love departed
Stuck here forever
In sickness, death and something worse

Blood and flowers
What were you really waiting for?
A little more than a coy virgin
A little less than a gushing whore
A game or four of let's pretend
To while away the  hours
I'll be your faithless sixth best friend

Blood and flowers
The photographer brought us more than showers
With a sharp eye for the money shot
I'll dust the album for his prints
Stuck here together
Since love departed
Stuck here forever
In sickness, death and something worse

Waiting at the altered side
A maid dishonored  and a flushing bride
A king to turn away the tide
And a Queen of clubbing by his side
What have we done since love departed
What  have we done?
We reached the finish line before we started.

Blood and flowers
Our presents lying by the trash
A toaster for the clichéd toasts
A bandage for the broken oaths
A plasterer for a broken heart
A beginning that could never start
Something
Borrowed blew and sold
A blistered finger cold as gold
A redeemed dream that couldn't last
A lover's name screams from my past

Blood and flowers
All that I could  have given you
An OK honeymoon weekend
A token from a magazine
From the safety of our marriage bed
He sat and watched your centre spread

Blood and flowers
Did we realise what we have started?
Stuck here together
Since love departed
Stuck here forever
In sickness, death and something worse

Poem 223

You have reached the time in your life for reflection
Each day dies
Slouched beside you
In your living room

Where the ticking of the clock tuts tuts
Away the fleeting tears
All hope
Has gone
Traces down my cheeks this tired tributary
Of years
All spemt
Where Once roared a raging sea

POEM 214

Children!
Your eyes lend I
The vision dispossessed of me
See past
The pixilated frontages of people's best intentions
And steer by  their lust for an instant's gratification
The emperor is impatient yet
My coliseum is nowhere near completion

You must wait patiently for your  entertainment
When every second column I type
Receives the thumbs down of deletion
For I  have drunk in the desert's  darkness
Parched by prayer
Ground my teeth
Upon this  brittle dirt and sand
Kissed the  Tempter's hand
Sacrificed His own son for
Immortality
Blinded in Gaza
Scorned by even the serpent
Too tired to repent
My sins breed beneath this scarred sky
Children your eyes lend I
For my time and the light are spent

FIVE YEARS AGO

FIVE YEARS AGO

Part I

That glorious summer

Owned only by we and

To wend down the winding

High-thicketed  lanes

Past clattering mills  and

The honey bee droning

We would lay under shade of willow and

Thorn as the sad sweet of

Rosemary caressed the air...

At shy ancient inns we boasted our love

And explored every castle and village nearby and

We found Roman roads barely  traced on the map

And museums as small as grocers' shop fronts

We braved every nettle and every wasp sting

And every flash shower that summer did bring

Embrace we in rain

And shelter in we

Far firmer far stronger than any oak tree

The signs we divined

Across ancient lay lines

And slept us content under their spell

And found long-lost henges exiled at chart's edges

Concealed within creeper and silent warped shade

And gazed we to heaven in parallel union

To stare at the ceaseless

Blue crease-less of skies

And chart the sun's apex high-nooned in the shimmer

Of honeycombed days dripping slowly with ease.

Part II

LATE in the autumn

At Tintagel most fitting

Like Isolde and Tristan

Upon the high cliff top

The sun's slow decline  to

A scarred charcoal line

Its terminal rays sad setting the distance

Drawing an end to the day and our time.

The warmth of the summer left too far behind us

The weakness of will and the skin's soft corruption

Worn down to the bone and then turning to stone

Holding the fossil that had once been your hand

To the churn of the shingle and the waves' wanton crashing

Crushing the tired last trace of the day

The chill of the sea-mist

All ceasing of colour

Replaced by a shroud of a permanent grey.

Collection Day

The further you go away
The clearer you become
The vagueness has found form
And the scales with which  I  weighed you up
Have fallen  from my eyes
For you were too much to take in at once
The day you just arrived
Just arrived at a station in my life
On a whistle-stop tour
From who knows where
With a flurry, in a hurry
And your typical fan-fare

Your presence was  an essence of glittering stars

An elegance of  comets' tails
And crazy carnivals and  bursting balloons and popcorn popping
All bouncing brilliance and leap- frog a hopping
An exotic bossanova  amid ticker-tape showers
And vivid red and orange splashes and vaudeville falls
Whiz-bangs and cheers to pummel a child's senses from the stalls
And a dance routine choreographed by a demon  from some Hellish halls
That left me drunk on your rumba and restless for your rhythm

Amid the  high dives loop the loops
Conundrums and high jinx
You'd turn my well laid picnic blanket life
Into a trampoline to
Scatter and spill
Everything with your chatter and
Misplaced clatter
Always the mad jack in the box
That really wound me up

On the days when it was raining
(Which were few and far between)
You were always the  upside down
And inside out umbrella
While all others fled the scene
Seeking shelter
You went helter skelter
Soaking up the tear-drops running down my face

And special cards you'd send me just to celebrate a Tuesday
Your spidery writing that scurried off the page in eight diverse directions
Every day you'd present a puzzle box you'd challenge me open
We had a language in our eyes far  better than words had ever spoken

You'd chalk numbers on my skin and
Hopscotch all over me
Gave me the giggles,
Made my skin all tingly
Scratched that itch
Only you knew how to flick my switch

I thought you were the constant in a world of change
When in fact you were the inconstant that left me
Bruised and breathless
Deliriously shattered
Painfully happy
You tore up my world and threw away the map
An all day ticket to ride on rails that only you could build
As you tilt my world from mundane to mishap
Left my stomach sick with laughter
Walking unsteadily after the fun fair ride

You were a course served at a restaurant I never had the chance to finish
Before it was whisked away and another placed before me
Yet the flavour I still savour
And the hunger pangs my heart

And now you've gone
To who knows where
I've plenty of time to check off the to do list
That somehow went amiss
When you were around
I've plenty of time to fill the time
Now that you're terribly missed.

I find myself making cups of tea for two

I ever hardly drink
And pace my tiny kitchenette
Then pour them down the sink

Last Monday on my bookshelf I sorted

My books by genre and then by author
And then by ascending and descending size order
And then counted them all 1, 2, 3...

On Tuesday I lay under the duvet until three

And on Wednesday  colour coded all the cutlery
And assigned a pair of socks for every day of the week
On Thursday I
Walked to the library the quickest way I could find
And returned home by the longest route
On Friday I researched the best dog food even though I don't own one
And watched the TV even though it wasn't switched on
Saturday saw me  walk along the river bank
And count every flower I encountered and created names for them all
And sit beneath the willows and
Wait for leaves to fall
On Sunday I read all  the supplements
On Monday I threw them in
The heavy blue bin
Tuesday is bin day
Hip skip hooray
A time of national celebration in the kingdom of my living room
From behind  the thick dark blinds
I watch the truck arrive
The hydraulics heave a profound sigh
Load and churn and  empty all
Digest,  release, allow to fall
So heavily
Emptied and abandoned
As the laden truck rolls on

That truck always ignores me
For here I always stay
Amid the litter and the debris
From the fallout
Awaiting our collection day

A tree grows by our gate.

A tree grows by our gate.
In winter It’s a black skeleton.
In spring It’s a  onfire.
In summer It’s a green galaxy.
In autumn It’s golden rain.
A tree glows by our gate.
